The text is illustrated with black-and-white line drawings by James J. Spanfeller. Black coloured boards with white illustration, on the lower right-hand corner of the front panel, of a small boy with his hands behind his back, with white writing on the spine. Bumping to the lower spine edge and shelfwear to the lower book edges. Dust marks and foxing to the top paper edge and browning to the others. Browning and handling marks to the endpapers. On the front endpaper there is an impression of tape running 3/4 the length of the page. The internal pages are also slightly browning. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing the same illustration as for front board (in red) , against a white background with black and red writing on the front panel and black on the spine. The dustwrapper is in the shabby shape. Fading, doling of the white background, grubby marks have occurred to the dustwrapper. Creases and tears in the dustwrapper have been repaired with tape (tape still in situ), and this tape has seeped through the dustwrapper causing discoloration and unsightliness. Tape has been applied to the front fold over, top and lower frontdustwrapper edge and to the both corners of the rear fold over.
